Meet Mr. Alex
The times tables struggle is real: Alex Kajitani knows it first-hand. As a math teacher for fifteen years, he’s watched students who don’t know their multiplication facts fall behind in class. As a parent, he’s watched his own child resist the flashcards and end up in tears.
Early in his teaching career, determined to find a way to engage students in math, Alex created The Rappin’ Mathematician—an alter ego who sings positive hip-hop songs to teach math concepts. It was a smash hit, getting kids in his classroom, school and eventually around the globe “math-rappin’”—not to mention landing Alex on The CBS Evening News (with Katie Couric saying, “I love that guy!”).
In 2009, Alex was named California Teacher of the Year and Top-4 Finalist for National Teacher of the Year, and began traveling the country speaking to teachers and parents. They told him, time and again, that their #1 math challenge was students not knowing their times tables. Teachers felt overwhelmed by the number of students who hadn’t learned them. Parents felt overwhelmed by not having enough time in their busy schedules to help.
As a result, Alex went on a mission to get ALL kids to master their times tables, and become confident in math and life. He now brings this vision to life with Multiplication Nation—a comprehensive, cutting-edge, online program that lets students “Meet, Memorize and Master” their times tables, from start to finish. No more kids falling behind in math, no more flashcard tears.
Alex is a respected author and trainer for teachers, with his book Owning It recommended by the U.S. Department of Education, and recent role as a lead author and teacher trainer for Chicken Soup for the Soul. He continues to travel the country as an acclaimed keynote speaker and has a popular TEDx Talk, “Making Math Cool.”
He lives in Southern California with his wife (and editor) Megan, and their two children.
